Read this first

Preparing your documents does not finalize your separation and does not grant you a divorce. It is the first step. MySelfRep is a document platform, not a law firm and not a court. No legal advice is given and no lawyer is retained by using it. Depending on your situation, some of these steps will still apply, and the platform tells you which ones:

  • Exchanging full financial disclosure
  • Signing in front of a witness
  • Getting independent legal advice before signing
  • Filing your documents with the court
  • Serving the other party properly
  • Waiting for a judge to grant an order or a divorce

How it works

The assessment is free and comes before the purchase, so you know whether the platform suits your situation before you spend anything.

1

Take the free assessment

A short scored questionnaire tells you whether your situation suits the platform or whether you should speak to a lawyer first. Free, no account needed.

3

Answer the guided questions

Plain language questions about your family, your finances and your arrangements. They change based on your answers, so you only see what applies to you. Full child and spousal support calculators are built in, including the Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines tool.

4

Review, download and compare

Your documents are generated from your answers. For an agreement, each party can purchase their own access, build their own version and compare the two, which shows exactly where you already agree and what is still open.

5

Who this is for

Anyone working through a family law matter who wants to control what it costs. That includes people who agree on nearly everything, people who agree on very little, people heading to court and people who will never see a courtroom. If you have a legal plan through your union, this works alongside it. You arrive at your plan lawyer with the documents drafted and your financial information organized, so the covered hours go further.

The platform can help you

  • You want a fixed cost instead of an hourly bill
  • You and the other party still have things to work out
  • You are going to court without a lawyer and need the forms done properly
  • You want to hand a lawyer a draft and pay for review rather than drafting
  • You want to know what support works out to before any conversation

Speak to a lawyer first if

  • There is family violence, or you feel unsafe or pressured
  • Something is urgent, such as a child being withheld or removed
  • A business, professional practice or complex pension needs valuing
  • You believe assets or income are being hidden from you
  • An immigration, tax or bankruptcy issue is tangled into the matter

The free assessment tells you which column you are in before you spend anything.

Every province, both official languages

Family law is not the same across Canada. Documents and court forms are matched to the rules where you live, including Quebec. Use the platform in English or in French.

Questions members ask

Does finishing my documents mean my separation or divorce is done?
No. Preparing documents is the first step, not the last. An agreement is not binding until it is properly signed and witnessed, and a divorce is not granted until a judge grants it. You may still need to exchange financial disclosure, get independent legal advice, file with the court and serve the other party. The platform tells you which steps apply to you and in what order. It does not do them for you.
Is this only for people who agree on everything?
No. The question is not how well you get along. It is whether your issues can be worked out between you or have to be decided by a judge. The court document package exists because many people end up in court without a lawyer and still need the forms done properly.
Do I still need a lawyer?
Sometimes, and the platform will tell you when. Independent legal advice is a good idea before signing any family law agreement. What the platform removes is the hours a lawyer spends gathering your information and drafting from scratch. If you have a legal plan through your union, walking in with a completed draft means the covered hours go toward advice rather than typing. Optional lawyer assistance is available through the platform if you would rather use it.
What if my former partner and I disagree?
For an agreement, you can each purchase your own access and build your own version from the same information, then compare them. Where they match, that issue is settled. Where they differ, you can see exactly which points are still open, which is what you take to a negotiation, a mediator or a lawyer. Finding that out before anyone bills by the hour is usually the biggest saving in the process. Court documents work differently. They are prepared from one party's position, so an applicant and a respondent each need their own purchase.
Are the documents specific to my province?
Yes. Agreements and court forms are generated for the province you select, and court forms are matched to your court location. Live in every province and territory including Quebec, fully bilingual.
Does Union Savings see my information?
No. You register, pay and use the platform directly. Union Savings does not receive your account, your answers, your documents or any record of what you purchased.

The terms, in plain language

The full terms of use and privacy policy govern your purchase. Here is what they say in the places that matter most.

A document platform, not a law firm

MySelfRep provides self serve document preparation software. It does not provide legal advice and no solicitor and client relationship is created by using it.

Preparing documents does not complete your matter

Generating a document does not make it binding, does not end your relationship at law and does not grant a divorce. Additional steps are required and they are set out inside the platform.

The output depends on what you enter

Documents are generated from your answers. If the information is incomplete or inaccurate the documents will be too. Support calculations are estimates based on the figures entered.

Your information stays yours

Your account and documents are private to you. Union Savings receives no information about who purchased, what was purchased or what any document contains.
